Ever wondered why we have families and if they are important?
This week in my Family Relations class, I learned families are not just
important they are essential! Each individual becomes who they are in society
because of the family they grew up in. The structure and teaching in a family
are very important because it has a great impact on a child's life and future.
I realized the importance of marriage because our children the right to be
born to parents committed to each other. Similarly, children have a right to
have both mom and dad with them to love them and take care of them. I also realized
that we must do all in our power to avoid divorce because it does have an
enormous impact on children.
I also learned the importance of getting an education because our children
will follow our example and strive to be educated as well. Getting an education
also allows are children to get better jobs and be able to be in a better
social class. This is not just me saying this because I'm a Mormon. There is so
much research that has been done for years that backs up what I'm saying. This
research allows us to see how these things do make a difference in our
families.
I'm so grateful for the knowledge I have gained about families through the
gospel and science. I have the gospel of Jesus Christ and science confirming to
me that families are essential. What we do in our families and the principles
we teach in our families are so important in the development of our children
because they will follow our example. I'm so grateful for being able to learn
about these things now so I can better prepare myself when I become a mother.

"Your individual choices have enormous social impact"
One of our assignments this week in Family Relations was to watch a video about birth rates around the world. To sum up the video, the world believes that we shouldn't have too many children because we are over populating the world and we are destroying it by having children. But on the contrary, birth rates are decreasing and this can have a great impact in our society. If birth rates continue to decrease it can cause great damage to one of the greatest social institution; the family.
While we were discussing in class who is affected by this and how? We touched on the topic of what happens to those spirit children who are not born into our homes. I remember hearing about this in young women’s. Those spirit children ends up being born into other families, and most likely into families that are not fully prepared to receive them. I began to think about my own family. Rob and I have been thinking about having a baby soon. It has been on our minds for awhile now, but I have been so afraid of becoming a mother.

I began to think about my own family. Rob and I have been thinking about having a baby soon. It has been on our minds for awhile now, but I have been so afraid of becoming a mother.
There are various reasons why I’m afraid:
1) I don’t want to go through the body changes (that has always been a sensitive topic for me).
2) I’m not looking forward to the pain that comes with child birth.
3) My family (non-members) does not agree with us having children yet.
4) Children are such a BIG responsibility and I don’t know if I can be a good mom.
5) I don’t know how I would handle being prego, finishing my last 2 semesters and having 2 jobs.
But today I felt peace about it. I’m still nervous and scared but I realized that I don’t want my children going to into another family. I want them with Rob and me forever!! I really hope that our society, like I did, realize the importance of having children. There are some sacrifices that need to be made but I have heard from friends that is worth it and today the spirit confirmed it to me.To sum this up I’m grateful for the things that were taught by the spirit of the Lord through my Professor Brother Williams.

A little about me
Hola! My name is Debbie. I'm originally from Los Angeles, California but I currently live in Rigby, Idaho. I have 2 semesters left in school (I'm way excited to be done). My major is Sociology, I honestly love my major and being able to learn from great teachers.
I served in the Dominican Republic Santo Domingo West Mission. It was one of the greatest experiences in my life! I got to serve such humble and amazing people. I also had the blessing of meeting my eternal companion, Rob, there. Rob and I celebrated our 1st anniversary on April 9th. It has been such an honor to me married to such a great man and priesthood holder. It definitely makes you feel special being with someone who loves you so much!
